About, how to use & limitations

About JPG to PNG

Convert JPG to PNG online without installing software. This tool turns JPG and JPEG photos into PNG files in your browser, which is useful when an editor, upload form, or design workflow requires PNG, or when you plan to edit an image repeatedly without adding new JPG compression each time you save. PNG is lossless, so the converted file keeps exactly the pixels of the decoded JPG. Drop up to 20 JPG files at once, see the size of each result, and download each PNG individually or all at once as a ZIP. Rotated phone photos come out upright because the browser applies the EXIF orientation.

How to use

  1. Click the "Drop JPG files here" area or drag JPG files onto it. Files you add later join the list, up to 20.
  2. Wait for "Converting X / Y..." to finish, then check each file's original size, new size, and percentage change.
  3. Click Download next to each converted PNG file to save it, or click Download all to get every file in one ZIP.
  4. Click ✕ on a row to remove that file, or CLEAR to empty the list.

Limitations & notes

  • New files are added to the list rather than replacing it; the list holds up to 20 files and any extras are skipped.
  • PNG is lossless, so the output is often several times larger than the original JPG.
  • Converting does not restore detail already lost to JPG compression, and no transparency is added.
  • Files that are not JPG, whether picked or dropped, are skipped and named in a notice.
  • Images over about 16,000 pixels per side show an "Image too large" error; some phones have a lower limit.

FAQ

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG stores the image losslessly, so no further quality is lost, but it cannot restore detail already removed by JPG compression.
Why is the PNG file bigger than my JPG?
PNG uses lossless compression, which is much less efficient for photos than JPG. A PNG of a photo is often several times larger than the original JPG.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
No. JPG files have no transparency, so the PNG keeps the same solid background as the original photo.
Can I convert several files at once?
Yes. Drop or select several files; files you add later join the list instead of replacing it, up to 20 in total. Each one gets its own Download button and a ✕ to remove it, and Download all saves them together as one ZIP. Files beyond 20 are skipped and a notice says how many.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs in your browser using the HTML canvas, and the converted file is created on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
