About Tip & Split Calculator

This tip calculator works out the tip, the total bill, and how much each person owes when splitting a check. Enter the bill amount, choose a 15%, 18%, 20%, or 25% tip or type a custom percentage, and set the number of people. The calculator shows the tip amount and the total, the per-person share when more than one person is paying, and a Copy Results button for the summary. It is handy for restaurant bills, group dinners, and bar tabs, or for checking a tip for delivery and other services. All calculations run in your browser.

How to use

  1. Enter or paste the Bill Amount in dollars; values like $1,200.50 are accepted.
  2. Pick a tip of 15%, 18%, 20% or 25%, or type your own rate in the Custom % box.
  3. Set the Number of People with the - and + buttons or by typing a number to split the bill.
  4. Read the tip, total and, when splitting, the Per Person amount in the summary below.
  5. Click Copy Results to copy the bill, tip, total and, when splitting, the per-person share.

Limitations & notes

  • The tip is calculated on the bill amount you enter, so enter the pre-tax subtotal if you tip before tax.
  • A custom percentage overrides the preset buttons; clear the Custom % box to fall back to the last preset you picked (18% by default).
  • Each share is rounded to the cent, so the shares added together can differ slightly from the total.
  • The per-person amount appears only when splitting between two or more people, and a negative bill or tip shows an inline error instead of a result.

FAQ

How do you calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage divided by 100. For example, an 18% tip on a $50 bill is $9, for a total of $59.
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the United States, 15% to 20% of the bill is a common range for sit-down restaurant service, and some people tip more for excellent service. Tipping customs vary by country and type of service.
How does splitting the bill work?
The calculator adds the tip to the bill and divides the total evenly by the number of people, rounded to the cent. It splits equally, so it does not handle separate items per person.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal. This calculator applies the tip to whatever bill amount you enter, so enter the subtotal if you prefer to tip before tax.
