About Sales Tax Calculator

This sales tax calculator finds the tax amount and final price for a purchase. Enter a pre-tax price and a tax rate to get the total, or switch to reverse mode to work backward from a tax-inclusive total to the original price and the tax portion. You can type any custom rate or pick a preset such as Texas (8.25%), California (9.5%), New York (8.5%), Canada GST (5%), or UK VAT (20%). Shoppers, freelancers, and small business owners use it to check receipts, quote prices, and back out tax from totals, then copy the breakdown with one click.

How to use

  1. Choose Base → Total to add tax to a price, or Total → Base to back tax out of a tax-included total.
  2. Enter or paste the Pre-tax Price, or the Total Price (incl. tax) in reverse mode; values like $1,299.99 are accepted.
  3. Pick a regional preset from the Tax Rate dropdown, or type any rate into the percent box.
  4. Read the pre-tax price, tax amount and total in the summary below.
  5. Click Copy to copy the rate, base price, tax amount and total as text.

Limitations & notes

  • Preset rates are approximate; actual rates vary by city, county and item type.
  • Switching between Base → Total and Total → Base keeps the entered amount and reinterprets it.
  • Amounts are always shown in US dollars, even with the Canada, Australia or UK presets; the percentage math is the same.
  • Each amount is rounded to the cent separately, so base plus tax can differ from the total by one cent.
  • A negative price or a tax rate outside 0–100% shows an inline error instead of a result.

FAQ

How do you calculate sales tax?
Multiply the pre-tax price by the tax rate divided by 100 to get the tax, then add it to the price. For example, $100 at 8.25% has $8.25 in tax, for a total of $108.25.
How do I find the price before tax from a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate as a decimal, for example $108.25 / 1.0825 = $100.00. The Total → Base mode does this automatically and shows the tax portion.
Are the state tax presets exact?
No. The state presets are approximate rates for convenience, and actual sales tax varies by city, county, and item type. Enter your local rate as a custom rate for a precise result; results are estimates only, not tax advice.
Can I use it for VAT or GST?
Yes. The math is the same for any tax added to a price, and presets are included for Canada GST (5%), Australia GST (10%), and UK VAT (20%).
